The Old Trafford club have been involved in a very public – and so far unsuccessful – manhunt of the Borussia Dortmund forward all summer, with BVB convinced that Sancho will stay after United failed to present an acceptable offer before the deadline imposed by the German club.
Writing in your Times In the column, Rooney explains that while the Bundesliga star clearly has the required level, he doesn’t fit the greater need his former team has and should instead focus on national team captain Kane.
“Jadon Sancho is a top-tier player, but I find it strange that he was Manchester United’s transfer priority,” he said.
“Why consider paying close to £ 100 million for someone similar to the talent you already have?
“United have Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial and where would the arrival of Sancho leave Mason Greenwood, who plays in the same position and is the same age?” I’d rather spend that £ 100 million trying to get Harry Kane. “
Rooney acknowledges that it would be a difficult task to sign Kane as well, but notes that they were hesitant to sign an elite center forward earlier this year and it has clearly proved costly.
Additionally, the Derby County player-coach feels that United’s most versatile attackers would benefit greatly from having a focal point at the top of the attack, allowing them to thrive in the spaces around and behind the striker.
“Yes, getting Kane out of Tottenham would be difficult, maybe impossible, but United is a club that must always strive to sign the best players and Kane is exactly what Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs, as is Erling Haaland, whom United missed, last year, a genuine No. 9.
“A Kane or Haaland or someone like Robert Lewandowski would give Rashford and Martial someone to play with and the freedom to roam different areas, pick up the ball and try to beat the men, without the burden of always having to score.”
