JOHANNESBURG – Police Minister Bheki Cele said on Monday that five suspects were arrested in the Senzo Meyiwa murder case.

Cele and National Police Commissioner Khehla Sithole gave an update on the protracted murder case of the former captain of the Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates.

Cele said the arrests were made Monday morning in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.

“These arrests are the result of an integrated multidisciplinary approach to this investigation, which is working closely with the director of the public prosecutor’s office,” said Cele.

“The South African Police Service (SAPS) and the prosecution team are confident that we have a strong case against the five suspects,” he added.

Six years have passed since Meyiwa was murdered in the Vosloorus home of the mother of his then-girlfriend Kelly Khumalo.

Just last week, it was leaked to the media that a weapon allegedly related to the murder had been found.

Cele condemned these leaks, saying they interfered with the work of investigating officers.

“Going forward, the investigation team will consider opening cases to defeat the ends of justice to ensure such leaks never happen again. Despite this interference, the open case team perseveres, ”he said.
