Walter Sisulu University (WSU) has made the decision to employ only female security guards in its university residences after a male security guard is alleged to have sexually harassed a female student.

The male security guard was arrested for the incident at the Potsdam site of the Buffalo City campus on November 2.

According to a statement from the university, the incident took place after the alleged perpetrator, while on patrol, entered a female residence and proceeded to talk with the student, entering his room without permission.

He was later alleged to have made sexual advances to the student, despite her protests.

“It is alleged that the matter was reported to the perpetrator’s supervisor, who, during the night of November 2 after the alleged incident, together with the alleged perpetrator, attempted to bribe the student with money in exchange for her silence,” the spokeswoman said. from WSU, Yonela Tukwayo. it said in a statement.

He said that after the student’s refusal, his parents were called and, upon arrival, shortly after 10 p.m., the police were called and the suspect was arrested that same night and taken to the police station where he was opened a case of sexual harassment.

Since then, the university had fired the suspect for his violation of the rules and his serious misconduct. The supervisor involved was also immediately fired by the security company.

“In an attempt to ensure that there is no effort to interfere, intimidate and / or harass the alleged victim during the ongoing investigation, all personnel who were on duty on the day of the incident have been suspended,” Tukwayo added.

“WSU management has immediately made a decision that will have the female dormitories on campus manned only by female security personnel.”

The university also requested an updated security background check of all security personnel employed by the company.

“The university is participating in efforts to provide student counseling,” Tukwayo added.
