Volkswagen’s long-awaited Golf R has been presented with 235 kW and 420 Nm of its well-known two-liter EA888 turbocharged engine.

Like previous versions, the eighth generation features a four-wheel drive system with torque vectoring. Volkswagen says this allows 100% of the torque to be sent to a dedicated wheel and reduces understeer to “nothing” according to the automaker.

Compared to a normal Golf 8, the R is 20mm lower than the ground. It is adorned with a bespoke front bumper and blue brake calipers that house 357mm front brake discs.

It sits on 19-inch wheels, has body side skirts and four chrome exhausts at the rear that sit alongside a black diffuser on each side. The rear is finished off with a large wing.

There are five different riding modes available, including ‘special’ and ‘drift’ to complement the ‘comfort’, ‘race’, ‘sport’ and ‘individual’ settings.

Inside, the R has black Nappa leather seats with embellished “R” logos around the cabin.

Volkswagen South Africa says it has not set a launch date for the new model, but has set aside the last quarter of 2021 or the first quarter of 2022 for its introduction of coal.
