What appears to be one of the last Volkswagen Citi Golf units ever produced has gone on sale in South Africa, with a asking price of 1.2 million rand.
Posted on Gumtree, the ad for what is believed to be the third latest Citi Golf to roll off the Uitenhage production line lists the mileage at just 27km.
According to the seller, the car was “never driven” and “is still in the same condition it came off the assembly line.”
Aimed at a “true collector,” the Port Elizabeth-based seller says the 2010 Shadow Blue metallic Citi Golf registered (manually) was auctioned by VW SA in 2009, with proceeds donated to the Ubuntu Education Fund. Power comes from VW’s 1.6i engine, which delivers 74 kW (at 5400 r / min) to the front axle.
A quick Google search shows a post about bidorbuy.co.za That reminds us that the Citi Golf in question – number 003 out of 1,000 individually numbered limited edition units – hit R300 100 at auction in late 2009, well above its retail price of R113 500 at the time.
The last two units produced, numbered 001 and 002, are kept in VW SA’s AutoPavilion museum in Uitenhage and in VW Germany’s Autostadt museum in Wolfsburg, respectively.
As a reminder, the Citi Golf made its first appearance on the roads of South Africa in 1984, six years after the first generation Golf was introduced locally. It remained on the market for the next 25 years.
