Western Cape Police have beefed up their presence in Ocean View, Cape Town after a wave of gang violence in the area.
Members of the Anti-Gang Unit, members of the Tactical Response Team, Public Order Police and additional detectives have been deployed to the volatile area to monitor the outbreaks and track down suspects.
A 25-year-old man was shot and killed by three suspects on Saturday afternoon. [December 26], according to a police statement. The deceased’s brother was also involved in the incident but survived his injuries.
Later that night, in apparent retaliation, a large group of men set fire to two vehicles at 7 p.m. near the scene of the shooting.
“It is alleged that the group also pursued another man who had to jump from the window of his house while fleeing from his attackers. An informal home was also damaged during the attacks, ”Brigadier Novela Potelwa said in a statement.
A video allegedly showing the violence that took place on December 26 appeared on one of the Ocean View community Facebook pages. In the video you can hear several shots, then you see a group running up the stairs and setting fire to a floor before fleeing.
Police detained a 23-year-old suspect who was part of the group. He was found in possession of a pistol, which is a homemade firearm, and ammunition.
Detectives questioned two people in connection with the murder and a 19-year-old was pulled over by one of the two vehicles that were set on fire.
Ocean View detectives are investigating several cases, including murder, attempted murder, and intentional damage to property.
“The area is relatively quiet at the moment as the police continue to monitor the situation,” Potelwa said Sunday.
Nithaam Solomon (28), an Ocean View resident who acts as a voice for his community, took to social media over the weekend to call for an end to violence, which is destroying the ‘united’ community.
“Things have changed. The fears we have now are very different from what we had back then,” said Solomon, who grew up in the area and witnessed its change.
Solomon recalls that in the past those who were not involved with gangsterism were not harmed, but that is no longer the case.
“I can’t say the same right now,” he said. “Right now, it’s free for everyone. People go to work, they come from work… they fear for their lives ”.
Children also have to live with this fear when they travel to and from school.
Solomon believes that there is a treasure trove of talent buried under the negative connotations, such as shooting, gangsterism, and crime, that dominate the discourse on Ocean View.
“These injustices are currently eclipsing our talent,” he said.
“On the way home, I heard there were shots, all kinds of things were happening in our community today.
“What has changed? Where have we gone wrong? Where have we hurt ourselves?
“We need to seriously change, but we have to be that change,” Solomon said.
