Gauteng police have denied the kidnapping claim, but confirmed that a robbery had occurred. They said the video was related to “continued trafficking of fake news related to human trafficking.”
Police spokesman Brig Mathapelo Peters said at 11 a.m. Tuesday that an undisclosed amount of money was allegedly stolen from a woman at the center.
“Preliminary investigations suggest that two unknown suspects who were traveling in a van may have followed the woman from a bank where she had reportedly withdrawn a large amount of money. The suspects are said to have approached the victim in the basement parking lot of the mall and demanded money at gunpoint, ”Peters said.
The center said in a statement that a couple who had withdrawn a large sum of money at the Carlswald Lifestyle Mall in Midrand were followed to the Boulders Center.
No shots were fired during the incident.
“Be aware of your surroundings at all times and report any suspicious activity to facility management or on-site security personnel. The safety of our customers, tenants and employees is the highest priority, ”said the center.
Peters said the suspects took a purse and other valuables. The woman and her six-year-old son were not injured.
Gauteng Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Elias Mawela warned that nothing good could come from the spread of fake news.
“The anonymity that often surrounds the identity of the creators or sources of fake news confirms that the intent can only be hostile, seeking to disrupt the community-police relations that police are working so hard to build and restore,” he said.
