Vice President David Mabuza says the government was caught off guard by Covid-19 corruption and said that some of its procurement systems left much to be desired.

“I must agree that as a government, I am sure we were caught sleeping, some of our procurement systems leave a lot to be desired and that is why the president has asked all of us to try to revamp our procurement system.

“As we speak, we are grappling with a procurement system and trying to close all loopholes,” he added.

Mabuza, who was responding to questions from deputies in the National Assembly, expressed “deep concern” over widespread allegations of corruption related to the purchase of personal protective equipment and other social assistance interventions.

“The corrupt activities revealed through the work of our law enforcement agencies highlight the extent to which our moral fiber has been compromised in the pursuit of self-enrichment at the expense of our people.

“Such activities not only undermine people’s trust in government, but they also undermine our efforts to attract much-needed investment so that we can grow this economy,” Mabuza said.

He said checks and balances were needed to help detect corruption as early as possible.
