DURBAN – An eight-year-old girl said that she hated her uncle for what he had done to him and was ashamed of the ordeal. The young woman added that her friends often made fun of her for having been raped.
Earlier in the week, the 28-year-old was sentenced to life in prison for the rape that took place in December 2019.
KwaZulu-Natal National Prosecution Authority spokeswoman Natasha Kara said the girl had been visiting her grandmother’s home in Ndwedwe when her uncle took her to a store in the area.
“He bought her french fries and a lollipop and then asked her to accompany him home. He took her to a river where he raped her. He gave her R2, promising to give her R100 if she didn’t tell anyone about it. When the girl returned home from her grandmother, she immediately told her grandmother what had happened, “Kara said.

Kara said the girl was taken to the Thuthuzela Care Center, a comprehensive rape crisis center run by NPA, based at Mahatma Gandhi Hospital, where she accessed post-trauma services.
In court, the Regional Court Prosecutor, Ishara Sewnarain, presided over the testimonies of the child’s mother and aunt, as the grandmother had passed away before the trial.
She said Sewnarain also directed the content of the medical report and the doctor’s evidence.
