Proteas batter, Rassie van der Dussen looks forward to the return of international cricket, where the team can reconvene and continue to work on the foundations that have been laid for the establishment of their new culture.
An expanded roster of 32 high-performance men with Proteas-recruited players who are regular fixtures on the South African national team and A-team, as well as players who have been identified as in plans for the near future, the former concluded. . Cultural camp of the national team in 10 years last week, where they agreed on a new way forward, with an updated value system that maintained Respect, empathy and belonging as its predominant upper pillars.
“The overall feeling was very positive,” Van der Dussen commented this week. “Having had a few months of rest and time to reflect after our last series against England and Australia, it was good to meet with everyone at a clean slate and it was good to discuss a new way forward and really dig into some issues that were urgently needed in this moment.
“The performance was discussed in depth. I am very excited and excited about what awaits us as a Proteas team. We found something in common that is really quite inspiring and I can’t wait to get going and apply it and start living it and start crafting game plans around it and transforming the way Proteas will play and be seen in the future.
“There were some very difficult topics discussed at the camp,” he continued. “Credit should go to CSA and the training and administration staff for creating that platform and environment so that everyone feels safe and can tell the stories and bring to light the issues that were on everyone’s heart.
“I was pleased with the team’s willingness to have open conversations, it is very important that people understand each other, first of all, there are different origins, different cultures, different races and religions, in a country as diverse as ours.
“It is important to open your mind and have a broad vision of everything that is important to everyone before taking a position in terms of where you place these characters. It was great to see that everyone was comfortable and that we had a platform where everyone could be honest with each other without being judged. “
One of the main topics of discussion was the transformation and the different experiences lived by players of different origins. The goal was to create an environment in which understanding and empathy prevailed as a result of teammates opening a window into each other’s experiences.
“It is extremely important to have discussions about race, history and the transformation of the country. In South Africa, one cannot afford to be oblivious to the past and, in my opinion, almost borders on ignorance if one does not make an effort to investigate the history of our country, the good and the bad ”, 31- one year old he explained. “When we get to a place where everyone can make an informed comment and are educated in these respects, people can come to a place where there will be much more empathy, more understanding and the way forward will be much clearer. “
Van der Dussen gave a breakdown of the three pillars of the value system, as well as the reasons why the team chose them. He said:
“Respect, empathy and belonging are the pillars of the value system that has been put in place. Respect for your team, for you, for your environment, for the people you relate to, the people who take care of you, the people who support you, our followers, the man in the street and basically live the Proteas way in your day -Today life, in everything you do. Maintaining that standard as your country’s ambassador and Proteas insignia ambassador.
“Empathy, is understanding. As I mentioned earlier, it is very important that everyone understands our country, understands what is happening in our country right now, understands the past and everything that happened. Understand different cultures, religions, races and understand different stories of different people and players and realize that no matter what race you are, what culture or religion you are, your story may still be different from someone else’s and the reason why what do you think. in some things and live your life in a certain way. We are all a product of our environment growing up, and it is very important to understand and respect the stories of others.
“Belong you are creating an environment where people can come in and feel comfortable right out of the box. They may feel like they are in an environment where they can speak their minds, where they can be themselves, where they don’t have to be afraid to speak up and express their opinion or say what makes them feel comfortable or uncomfortable. It is creating an environment where you are in a team, but you feel like part of a family and even though you are far from home, you feel like you are with your family and you are at home. Belonging goes hand in hand with being comfortable and when you’re comfortable as a person or as a player, that’s when the best comes out of you ”.
