JOHANNESBURG – Following in the footsteps of the upgraded Toyota Hilux with which it shares a platform, the Toyota Fortuner SUV has received its own makeover, including a refreshed styling, a new infotainment system and a beefed-up flagship engine.
According to its cousin bakkie, Fortuner’s 2.8-liter GD-6 turbodiesel has been upgraded with a new turbocharger and improved cooling and as a result now produces 150 kW at 3000-3400 rpm and 500 Nm at 1600-2800 rpm. This is a significant improvement over the previous engine powers of 130 kW and 450 Nm.
Gasoline engine discontinued
On the engine side, Toyota has discontinued the derivative of the 2.7-liter normally aspirated gasoline engine, which produced 122 kW and 245 Nm. The 4-liter V6 petrol option was already dropped from the range in April this year when the ‘Epic’ models were introduced, and this means that there are no longer any petrol engine options in the Fortuner range. But will anyone miss them? We doubt it.
For those looking for a more affordable diesel option, Toyota still offers the 2.4 GD-6 unit, which is good for 110 kW and 400 Nm.
The price advantage is significant, with 2.4 GD-6 models starting at R566 800, while 2.8 GD-6 derivatives cost between R700 100 and R790 500.
Specification changes
The 2.8 models have also undergone a spec reshuffle, with buyers now having a choice between a standard model and a more luxurious VX trim grade.
The VX costs only R20,000 more, but it comes with an additional kit. The standard cruise control system, for example, is replaced by adaptive cruise control, and the VX also gets Lane Departure Alert, Pre-Crash system, and heated seats (front only).
However, the standard 2.8 models are still extravagantly equipped, with a standard kit including automatic air conditioning, six-speaker touchscreen infotainment system with navigation and reversing camera, electric operation for the front seats and hatchback. rear and trailer sway control.
The 2.4 models settle for conventional air conditioning, as well as manual operation of the seats and the tailgate, while the satellite also drops.
Interior and exterior improvements
According to the new Hilux, the infotainment system has been updated, with the screen now measuring 20 cm and the system is compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The cabin also features some new materials, including decorative stitching on the vertical panels that surround the infotainment system.
On the outside, the Fortuner has received a subtle facelift, including a new (and larger) grille with black mesh trim replacing the chrome from the previous model.
There is also a new front bumper, with a larger air intake, and the LED headlights and taillights are new too.
Customers can choose from seven exterior colors, including the new Cosmic Blue shade.
