When the Premier League season ended on July 26 and Manchester United qualified for the Champions League, fans were expecting to see a strong statement in the transfer market.
So far there has been a moderate improvement at best, with only Donny van de Beek signed, just five days before the Premier League season begins.
Jadon Sancho was the main target, and so far a deadlock between United and Borussia Dortmund remains.
United have not given up on closing a deal, and BBC Sport reported last week that the club had come close to agreeing on personal terms and agent fees to sign the player.
However, there is still no agreement with Borussia Dortmund. BBC Sport reported on Monday that the German side will keep the player.
It appears that only if United pays Dortmund’s £ 108 million asking price will they sell, and currently the Red Devils have no intention of doing so.
He is carrying out
Sancho returned to Germany after international matches and was in action for Dortmund last night in their cup match against Duisburg.
It took the winger just 14 minutes to reach the score sheet, from the penalty spot, as Dortmund edged out lower-level opposition.
He connected well with another near-miss for United, Jude Bellingham, who scored his team’s second goal.
Speaking before the game, the club’s director, Sebastian Kehl, was quoted by FussballTransfers as saying: “Jadon Sancho will play for BVB this season.”
United have not given up and there may be a late turnaround, but with each passing day this seems to be a tougher deal to make.
The club’s reported list of endorsement options is uninspired, with The Telegraph reporting that United could turn to Gareth Bale, Ivan Perisic or Douglas Costa, who is the youngest of the trio at 29.
Fan frustration
The entire saga has totally frustrated fans, who have ventured on social media about the seemingly retrograde way United have done the club’s business this summer, with only one player signed so far.
