However, in a statement from Ulster on Saturday, the Irish club said terms had been agreed to allow Coetzee to leave the club at the end of the current season.
The statement also confirmed that Coetzee had expressed a strong desire to remain in South Africa amid the uncertainty surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic. This wish remained the same even after the 29-year-old returned to Belfast when the PRO14 season resumed.
“Marcell has been a great performer for us on and off the field and I am confident that he will continue to carry his high performance standards through June,” said Ulster head coach Dan McFarland.
‘We have a talented team that is growing in experience. We look to complement and support that talent, particularly in the forwards, in line with our ambition to constantly compete for championships. ‘
Coetzee confirmed in a statement that after reflecting on his career during the running of the bulls, he decided it was best to go home to South Africa.
Coetzee has been with Ulster since joining the Sharks in 2016. While the first two seasons of his career at PRO14 were affected by knee injuries, Coetzee repaid Ulster’s faith by helping them reach the final of the 2019 season. -20, where they were defeated by Leinster.
The Springbok were nominated for the European Player of the Year and were named the Ulster Personality of the Year and the Ulster Supporters Club Player of the Year for 2020.
