The new year came with fresh fines for some UK revelers who broke coronavirus lockdown measures to party on the streets and in not-so-clandestine venues.

According to The Guardian, the police interrupted the celebrations in Brighton, Manchester, Leicestershire, Sheffield, Essex, London and Lancashire. Hundreds too supposedly reunited on the esplanade of Edinburgh Castle.

In London, in particular, a woman without a mask was seen arguing with the police while holding a glass of champagne.

“They had harsh words,” photographer Thomas Bowles told MailOnline. “The police told him that he was not allowed to drink in public and told him he had to go home.”

The city was also the scene of 58 unlicensed meetings in which 217 received notices of flat fines, Sky News reported. Four were arrested in central London, the outlet said, and a cafe was arrested for housing about 50 people who smoked, watched European football and listened to music.

Meanwhile, in Manchester, more than 100 fixed fine notices were issued at venues including house parties, a rave and a pub.

And in Essex, hundreds of revelers gathered in a church, where they threw objects at the police force. Hundreds more in the county celebrated at an abandoned warehouse and another hundred celebrated at a house party. The host, along with others across the country, was fined 10,000 pounds, the equivalent of more than $ 13,000.

Some residents of England are currently under Level 3 restrictions, which prohibit people from different households from mingling indoors, and others are under Level 4 restrictions, which only allow two people to meet outdoors.

Still, most of the residents followed the rules, police told the media.

“I am confident that the majority of our well-thought-out residents will join me in condemning this irresponsible, life-threatening behavior,” said Chris Sykes, the Greater Manchester Deputy Chief of Police, according to The Guardian.
