JOHANNESBURG – The national vice president of the United Democratic Movement (UDM), Mncedisi Filtane, passed away on Sunday due to complications related to COVID-19.

Filtane was also a member of the Eastern Cape provincial legislature and served in the National Assembly from 2014 to 2019.

It is understood that the politician was admitted to hospital on Friday due to low oxygen levels and passed away in the early hours of Sunday.

“We have lost a lord and a father,” UDM leader Bantu Holomisa said in a statement. “At this time, we extend our condolences to his wife, children and family by gathering them in our thoughts and prayers. May his soul rest in peace.”

Filtane’s passing comes less than two weeks after the death of former Nelson Mandela Bay Township Mayor Mongameli Bobani.

Bobani spent three weeks in the hospital before passing away after contracting COVID-19. He was buried in Port Elizabeth on Friday.

Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize was in the Eastern Cape this week amid fears that an intensifying epidemic in the province could have a ripple effect on the rest of the country.

The Eastern Cape has more than 10,000 active cases, which is the highest than anywhere else in South Africa.

There is concern that the rapid rise in infections in the province could overwhelm its already struggling healthcare system.
