CAPE TOWN – The United Democratic Movement (UDM) paid tribute to the late former Mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay, Mongameli Bobani.

His death comes three weeks after being admitted to St George’s Hospital in Port Elizabeth with complications from COVID-19.

His condition deteriorated and he was subsequently connected to a ventilator.

UDM leader Bantu Holomisa said he was a hard worker: “We congratulate Councilor Bobani for the good work he did for the people of Nelson Mandela Bay and his tireless efforts. He was always available to roll up his sleeves for work. “

Bobani was elected mayor in August 2018 in a shocking vote in which former mayor and Democratic Alliance councilor Athol Trollip lost power after a DA councilman abstained from voting.

But Bobani was removed from office last year via a vote of no confidence.
