JOHANNESBURG – Two players have been withdrawn from the South African team for the Test series against Sri Lanka after testing positive for COVID-19, Cricket South Africa announced on Friday.

The players, who were not named, will be isolated with immediate effect and will not participate in the series.

The positive results came after tests conducted on Wednesday and Thursday.

The announcement came after three players were added to the team for the first test, which begins in Centurion on December 26. The team, which now consists of 17 players, will meet in Pretoria on Saturday.

Players will enter a biosecure environment in which they will remain until the end of the series.

According to a statement from Cricket South Africa on Friday, the additions were part of a plan “to integrate more players” after the last round of four-day national matches.

Hitter Raynard van Tonder, fast pitcher Lutho Sipamla and all-rounder Dwaine Pretorius are additional players.

Van Tonder and Sipamla are among 12 members of an expanded team who played in two games earlier in the week during which multiple people reportedly tested positive for Covid-19. One of the matches was abandoned after one day on Sunday.

According to the CSA statement, “no other players on the currently named team were considered close contacts after contact tracing procedures were carried out.”

Pretorius was not considered for the original team due to a hamstring injury but, according to the CSA, he has made “great progress.”

Fast pitcher Kagiso Rabada remains unavailable due to injury.
