Two policemen who demanded a bribe of R3,000 to make a case “disappear” will spend the next eight years in prison.

The Palm Ridge Magistrates Court convicted Officers Sandile David Magubane, 33, and Masito Caiphus Ratsupa, 36, of corruption.

In August 2015, three detectives attached to the Elsburg Police Station approached a man and demanded R3,000 in cash to make a case against him disappear, said Hawks spokesman Captain Ndivhuwo Mulamu.

The Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation Unit in Germiston conducted a sting operation at the Sontonga shopping center in Katlehong and arrested the defendant and another officer, Sergeant Simphiwe Blessing Buthelezi, 38.

All three were charged with corruption. However, the charges against Buthelezi were dropped for lack of evidence.

On Friday, the court found Ratsupa and Magubane guilty.

The court also declared them incapable of possessing firearms.
