Cape Town – The family of four-year-old Milani Keke, who was mutilated to death by two pit bulls in Gugulethu over the weekend, said they were struggling to come to terms with their loss.
Milani was attacked by the dogs while trying to retrieve a ball while playing rugby with friends at home on Sunday.
The animals are currently in the care of the SPCA while investigations continue.
Speaking to the Cape Times on Monday, her traumatized mother, Nothemba Keke, said she was inside her home when the incident occurred.
“I was here at home when I heard my daughter screaming ‘Mom get out, Milani is being attacked by dogs.’ I ran outside and one was attacking him from the back of his skull while the other was barking and running around him. I ran and tried to jump over the fence to save him, but a neighbor grabbed me and pulled me back, “he said.
The mother of two said the family was in shock.
“I do not like talking about that. Even now I don’t feel like talking; we are distraught and still in shock. “
Police spokesman Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana confirmed that they were investigating the attack.
“Gugulethu Police opened a death investigation case after a 4-year-old boy died in NY 50 after two dogs attacked him inside the yard while searching for a ball.
“The circumstances surrounding this incident are being investigated by the police, with no arrests so far.”
Neighborhood councilor Sharon Manata said the Gugulethu community was traumatized and grieving with the family.
“Some people are very angry. You wonder, in these four-bedroom houses that we have, what makes a person have such vicious dogs?
“We don’t have big yards, this innocent boy was just playing in his backyard and by mistake the ball fell into the next yard.
“This kid wasn’t even in these dogs’ yard, but they dragged him off the fence. We cry with the family, we cry with the mother who is traumatized by seeing her son being mutilated by the dogs. Truly, as a community, we are devastated, ”he said.
Cape of Good Hope SPCA spokeswoman Belinda Abrahams said law enforcement brought the two dogs to them after the incident. “They are now in our care. The police will investigate the matter and make the decision regarding the future of the dogs, ”he said.
Vincent Domingo, general secretary of the Gugulethu Development Forum, said this was a lesson for all dog owners.
“Like the government, our children must have recreational facilities where it is safe for them to play. Let’s come together as a community and support the child’s family during this time. Our condolences to the family, may the soul of the child rest in peace, ”said Domingo.
