Johannesburg – Two people were killed and six others injured, four seriously, in two separate road accidents in Gauteng and Mpumalanga on Christmas Day, paramedics said Saturday.
Two people suffered fatal injuries, while four others were seriously injured in a two-vehicle collision on the R28 at Westonaria in West Rand on Friday night, ER24 spokeswoman Ineke van Huyssteen said in a statement.
When ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene shortly after 11:30 pm, Gauteng provincial emergency medical services (EMS) were already present, he said.
“Upon further evaluation, paramedics found two people who had suffered fatal injuries. Unfortunately, nothing could be done for them and they were pronounced dead at the scene. Four others were found to have suffered serious injuries.”
They were treated on the spot before being transferred to the hospital by ER24 and the Gauteng Emergency Medical Service. Three other people were found walking at the scene, but they refused to be transported to the hospital.
Paramedics did not know the exact circumstances surrounding the accident, but local authorities were on the scene to investigate, Van Huyssteen said.
In a separate statement earlier, ER24 spokesman Russel Meiring said a man and a woman were injured on Friday morning when their bakkie spun out of control and rolled onto the R580 at Secunda in Mpumalanga.
ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene at 2.15am and found the bakkie on his roof on the side of the road. The man and woman were found trapped in their vehicle. The rescue services had to use the jaws of life kit to free them from the vehicle.
“Once they were discharged, the doctors evaluated the patients and found that they had sustained moderate injuries. The patients were treated and then transported to Evander Provincial Hospital for further care,” Meiring said.
