JOHANNESBURG – Two Eldorado Park police officers are expected to appear in Protea Magistrates Court following the death of Nathaniel Julies.

The couple were arrested Friday night on murder charges and defeating the ends of justice.

Authorities say the 16-year-old boy was caught in a crossfire between police and suspected gangsters on Wednesday.

His frustrated family and community members say he was shot after failing to respond to officers’ questions.

The death of the teenager has caused commotion across the country, prompting calls for justice.

His murder has led to widespread condemnation of the behavior of the South African police towards the public.

The head of the Independent Police Investigation Directorate, Dikeledi Ntlatseng, said a preliminary report showed that the crime scene was tampered with.

Ipid spokesperson Ndileka Cola said more details about the case would be released once the officers appear in court soon.

“Following the information available, we have made the decision to detain the two SAPS members involved in the alleged shooting and the two SAPS members are attached to the Eldorado Park Crime Prevention Unit. Further details on the case will only be available once the couple appear in Protea Magistrates Court. “
