Two children and their grandmother were burned to death after their home was engulfed in flames in KwaNongoma, KwaZulu-Natal.
The incident took place on Friday night.
According to the KwaZulu-Natal Ministry of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, MEC Sipho Hlomuka, the victims suffered severe burns.
“Two children along with their grandmother died from the serious burns they suffered as a result of the fire that engulfed their house. The cause of the fire is not confirmed at this time, but it is suspected that it could have been caused by a candle.” Hlomuka said.
Hlomuka expressed her condolences to the grieving family.
Hlomuka also dispatched his department’s disaster management teams to KwaNongoma to provide immediate assistance to the family and investigate the possible causes of the fire.
KwaZulu-Natal residents were urged to be wary of the dangers posed by burning candles, especially when left unattended.
