Durban – Tweeps was not impressed with the South African Broadcasting Corporation’s view that Netflix users should pay television license fees.

On Tuesday, IOL reported that the public broadcaster said a regulation is needed requiring pay-TV service providers such as MultiChoice (DStv) and Netflix to collect television licenses on behalf of the broadcaster.

In a presentation to Parliament’s Communications Portfolio Committee by Deputy Communications Minister Pinky Kekana, the public broadcaster said the “outdated” definition of a television license needs to be adapted to accommodate current technologies.

Kekana indicated that television licenses could be expanded to include other devices and not just televisions.

The SABC said such regulation would be similar to municipalities that collect traffic fines and motor vehicle license discs.

@itseviforyou said: “Sabc goes against our human rights by forcing us to pay for the TV license through Netflix and Dstv because there stupid employees looted all the money now we all have to suffer. They want people without TV to pay the TV license, it’s a mess. “

@BesterDominique tweeted: “SABC will take the voetsek label to a level of nothing.”

@KKPKailin tweeted: “Where is the TV license money going anyway? I haven’t seen SABC in maybe 10 years … “

@ManRichD tweeted: “SABC must find other ways to generate revenue besides TV license.”

@ M0LEBATSI tweeted: “SABC is out of his mind.”
