WASHINGTON (AP) – US President Donald Trump on Saturday urged Republican lawmakers to back his upcoming Supreme Court nomination “without delay” as the issue stirred the election campaign.

Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a staunch liberal, died Friday, opening a crucial court vacancy and sparking a fierce political battle ahead of the Nov. 3 vote.

Trump tweeted that the “most important” decision for which Republicans had been elected was “the selection of the justices of the United States Supreme Court.”

“We have this obligation, without delay!” added.

Just before elections in which Trump trails his Democratic rival Joe Biden in polls, the vacancy offers Republicans a chance to secure a conservative majority in court for decades to come.

Democrats have demanded a delay in the nomination until after the election, an uphill battle given the control that Republicans have in the Senate, which must approve the president’s candidate.

Trump said in August that he would have no qualms about appointing a new judge this close to the election, and last week unveiled 20 names of possible options, all deeply conservative.
