WASHINGTON – U.S. President Donald Trump said early Friday that he and First Lady Melania tested positive for the coronavirus.

“Tonight, @FLOTUS and I tested positive for COVID-19. We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through it TOGETHER!” Trump tweeted.

The news comes after he previously confirmed that a senior adviser had tested positive for coronavirus.

Trump’s close aide in the White House, Hope Hicks, had tested positive earlier that day. Hicks was aboard Air Force One with the president as he traveled to Cleveland, Ohio, for the first presidential debate with his rival, Democrat Joe Biden, on Tuesday.

And he also joined Trump on his trip to a campaign stop in Minnesota on Wednesday.

The president is routinely tested for COVID-19, although the exact frequency is unclear.
