This week, hundreds of protesters from the Allied SA and All Truck Drivers Forum (ATDFASA), the SA National Freight Drivers Association and the National Federation of Truck Drivers joined uMkhonto weSizwe Military Veterans (MKMVA) and they marched through Durban calling for the removal of foreign drivers and vendors.

ATDFASA distanced itself from the acts of violence, but Secretary General Sifiso Nyathi said that many members had lost faith in the forum due to their inability for the government to act.

“They don’t trust us anymore because after three years of collaborating with the government and various others in the industry there has been no change,” Nyathi says.

“This problem was due a long time ago and the drivers are now angry, they decided to take the law into their own hands. While we do not agree with the methods of burning trucks and shooting drivers, we support the plight of South African drivers who want employment.

He said that the forum’s decision to protest along with the MKMVA was not a political move. “MKMVA has sympathy for truckers. They have their own agenda with the ANC, I don’t know what their needs are, ”Nyathi said.

“We appreciate your help to force the government and employers to comply. The government needs to intervene with the law, our war is with the employers. Some of our members are ANC, some are DA and some are EFF, so we don’t have a limit on any specific party. “
