A Harare man on vacation with his family fell into a gorge at Victoria Falls on New Years Day.
A rescue team at 5 in the afternoon had not located him.
Zimbabwe National Parks (Zimparks) spokeswoman Tinashe Farawo told TimesLIVE that the tourist fell into the gorge around 2.30pm.
“There was an incident this afternoon when a 40-year-old man fell into the gorge around 2.30 pm. We are on the ground looking for him, ”Farawo said.
The incident occurred at a time when Victoria Falls are experiencing a strong supply of water from the Zambezi River due to recent local and regional rains.
The Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) said this week that an estimated 513 cubic meters per second was flowing into Victoria Falls as of December 23, 2020. This is a steady increase of 302 cubic meters per second from the same time in 2019.
In April 2020, when the river flow in Zimbabwe and Victoria Falls was low, Elmon Muleya, 29, of the city of Victoria Falls, cheated death after falling into a gorge into the Zambezi River before a rock will crush both legs.
In 2005, a tourist from Johannesburg died on New Year’s Eve when he fell 40 meters down a rock face at Victoria Falls while trying to retrieve the glasses he had dropped.
