Tottenham Hotspur gave up points on Sunday after conceding a penalty and an own goal to Leicester City in a 2-0 loss.

Jamie Vardy converted the penalty late in the first half, while an own goal by Toby Alderweireld early in the second gave Leicester the lead.

Tottenham: Mourinho’s title challenge shows cracks

Leicester received a penalty three minutes into first-half injury time when Serge Aurier stormed Wesley Fofana and brought him down. Vardy stepped forward to take the penalty and converted it down the middle.

“He made a mistake today but before his mistake in the 45 or 46 minute we had other players making mistakes in other areas of the pitch. I can’t blame a player for a mistake,” Mourinho said of the penalty after the match.

“I am frustrated when I lose, but it is not that there is a goal that cannot be reached. Our goal is to win the next game and the result of the previous games does not interfere with our goal for the next game.”

It looked like Leicester had scored their second goal of the afternoon within two minutes of the second half when James Maddison hit the ball.

However, a VAR review showed that he was slightly offside and the goal was disallowed.

There was not so much uncertainty 12 minutes later when Marc Albrighton crossed a ball into the area that Vardy headed for. His shot shot off Alderweireld’s knee and into the back of his own net.

“We have come here with a game plan and we have absolutely nailed what we wanted to do,” Vardy told Sky Sports.

“It has put us on the way to get the three points that we think we deserve.

“Obviously it shows that we are doing something wrong in our home games. We need these performances to play out week after week and hopefully get more wins.”
