JOHANNESBURG – The South African National Metalworkers Union (Numsa) said it instructed its lawyers to take necessary action after its South African Airways (SAA) Technical members did not receive their salaries.
The workers were supposed to receive their wages on March 27, and the management of the conflicting state airline promised that it would make the payment before April 1. But it has not met that deadline.
SAA was placed under a corporate bailout about two years ago due to mismanagement, which left it in dire straits.
Numsa’s Phakamile Hlubi-Majola said it was unacceptable that SAA workers continued to bear the brunt of the alleged corruption at the struggling airline.
“We believe that it is absolutely shameful that the workers of SAA’s subsidiaries continue to suffer due to the mismanagement of the corporate rescue plan.”
At the same time, while the South African Airways Pilots Association (Saapa) had been given the green light to embark on a protected strike, members were still waiting for an eleventh-hour resolution to their dispute on Thursday.
LEA: SAA Pilots Association awarded strike certificate for unpaid wages
The union, which represents most of the pilots of the state airline, received a strike certificate and has already notified the airline 48 hours in advance.
The pilots claimed that they had not been paid their wages for almost a year.
