KWAZULU-NATAL – A local tavern in Tongaat was set on fire after police found the remains of a registered student who is believed to have been beaten to death on that property.

Angry community members reportedly set fire to the tavern overnight after police yesterday found a body believed to be Andile Mbuthu’s in a river.

The 16-year-old was assaulted earlier this month after being accused of stealing alcohol from the popular spot.

This occurred just a day after six suspects linked to the disappearance of the enrolled student were questioned.

The teen’s family say they are disappointed with the way the police initially handled the case.

The family say that the day before his disappearance they approached the local police station to report that he was being assaulted in a nearby tavern, but officers told them to return the following day.

Her aunt, Zodwa Jali, says they have lost a smart young man with a bright future.

“We are confident that his name would be counted against those who would have passed the enrollment this year.”

Jay Naicker of the police says they have not yet done a forensic analysis of the body they discovered yesterday and that no one has yet been charged.
