Last month, Ramaphosa “vigorously rebuked” the Finance Minister for his tweets criticizing the removal of Zambian Central Bank Governor Denny Kalyalya by President Edgar Lungu. Kalyalya was fired and replaced by Christopher Mvunga.
In reaction to the news, Mboweni threatened to “mobilize” if he was not given the reasons why Kalyalya had been fired, saying that “hell was on the way”.
“The governor was a good guy. Why do we do these things as Africans? The president of Zambia must give us the reasons why he removed the governor, or else hell is on the way. I will mobilize, ”Mboweni said in a now-deleted tweet.
Ramaphosa said Mboweni’s comments did not reflect the views of his government.
Zambian Information Minister Dora Siliya also intervened, saying they were surprised by Mboweni’s criticism of a sovereign Zambian decision. She called Mboweni’s tweets “immature” and “inappropriate criticism.”
“The minister should be addressing the Covid-19 issues facing South Africans, our focus here. We will deal with the matter diplomatically, ”he said.
