Three people were killed in two separate incidents in northern KwaZulu-Natal after they were struck by lightning on Wednesday.

This brings to eight the number of fatalities caused by lightning in the province during the last two weeks.

A six-month-old baby was orphaned when her parents succumbed to injuries after lightning struck their home in eManyiseni, uMhlabuyalingana Township, north of KwaZulu-Natal, on Wednesday.

In a statement Thursday, the department of traditional affairs and cooperative governance said inclement weather “continues to wreak havoc” in rural communities in KwaZulu-Natal.

“In the past two weeks, the province’s disaster management teams have dealt with several incidents in which lives were lost as a result of severe weather conditions.”

The department said that in the first case, lightning struck Mngomezulu’s home, killing both parents of the six-month-old baby.
