Three police officers between the ages of 38 and 49 will appear in Durban Magistrates Court on Monday after their arrest on Friday for the alleged theft of R2.2 million in a bogus search and seizure operation.

Two of the officers are from the Durban K9 Unit and one from Pinetown Crime Intelligence.

According to Police spokesman Colonel Katlego Mogale, on April 6, 2019, at approximately 11:05 p.m. in the Hillcrest area, a noncommissioned officer, three sergeants, and a civilian allegedly visited the author’s home to conduct a “search and seizure” of a firearm.

“While searching the facilities, the suspects [allegedly came] in two cardboard boxes and a safe containing R2.2 million.

“They confiscated the cash without allegedly providing the necessary documentation indicating where the money was being taken.

“It is also said that they prevented the complainant from following the members who were transporting the money,” Mogale said.

The author opened a robbery case at Hillcrest Police Station and was referred to the Hawks Serious Corruption Investigation Unit.

Five people were successfully linked to the crime.

Two other suspects remain at large. “Upon their arrest, they will face charges of robbery and, alternatively, armed robbery,” Mogale said.
