Johannesburg – Three people were killed and 12 others suffered minor to serious injuries when a truck spun out of control and rolled down the R41 at Witpoortjie in Roodepoort in Johannesburg on Sunday afternoon, paramedics said.
“It is alleged that the truck swerved to avoid a stopped taxi and collided with several people on the side of the road,” ER24 spokesman Ross Campbell said in a statement.
ER24 paramedics were on the scene at 2.22pm, along with Gauteng provincial government emergency medical services (EMS) and staff from the Johannesburg city fire and rescue services, it said.
“All the wounded [people] it is believed that they were adults. Two of the patients are believed to be from the truck and the rest are unfortunate bystanders. Two people were found trapped under the truck and a third right behind it on the ground. All three had suffered fatal injuries and were pronounced dead upon arrival. “
ER24 treated and transported six patients, one who was in serious condition and required advanced life support interventions, and another five who had sustained minor injuries.
All the injured people were taken to Leratong Hospital for further care. Another private medical service at the scene treated and transported one patient and the other five were treated and transported by the Gauteng Emergency Medical Service.
Heavy rescue teams were called to the scene to move the truck and the Johannesburg Metro police were also on site to conduct further investigations, Campbell said..
