Durban – A car theft syndicate has developed an elaborate but cunning car stealing scam in South Africa that has car owners inviting them into their homes and handing them car keys.
According to Tracker, one of the largest vehicle tracking companies in the country, car thieves are stealing cars pretending to be from a car tracking company.
In a warning to all of its customers Tuesday, Tracker said that scammers pretending to work for Tracker are contacting vehicle tracking customers.
“They inform the customer that something is wrong with their tracking device and that they need to go out and repair or replace the device,” the statement said.
“Once on the scene, the perpetrators will claim that they need to test the device by taking the car for a test drive or they will say that they cannot complete the on-site repairs and must take the vehicle to the assembly center.”
According to Tracker, the scammers have targeted the customers of various vehicle tracking companies.
The company advised that if you are contacted by someone claiming to be from Tracker about repairs to your tracking device, you should ask them to guide you through the Tracker security verification questions associated with your account to verify the legitimacy of the call.
If they can’t, let them know that you’ll need to contact someone at Tracker to verify your claim.

A Tracker technician will never need or should request a test drive of your vehicle
Always check the email address from which the request is sent; this is often an immediate gift, as criminals would not use a tracker.co.za address
