Customers of vehicle tracking companies are being targeted by a new scam involving thieves posing as technicians.

In a statement, Tracker says its customers are being contacted by scammers pretending to work for the company.

“They advise the customer that there is something wrong with their tracking device and that they should go out to repair or replace the device.

“Once on the scene, the perpetrators will claim that they need to test the device by taking the car for a test drive or they will say they cannot complete the on-site repairs and must take the vehicle to the assembly center.”

The thieves then take the vehicles.

According to Tracker, the crooks are targeting the customers of various vehicle tracking companies in South Africa.

A Tracker technician will never need or should request a test drive of your vehicle, the company said.

He also recommended that his customers always ask the caller claiming to be from Tracker to ask the set of security verification questions. “If they can’t, let them know that you’ll need to contact someone at Tracker to verify your claim.”

If a request comes via email, the email address must be from the company’s email address.

On social media, several vehicle tracking clients confirmed that scammers contacted them:
