Cape Town – A cash transit clerk was abducted Saturday afternoon by thieves who tied up explosives and forced him to clean ATMs in Cape Town.
The dramatic robbery came to an end when the man was left by the N2 road with the explosives still tied to his body.
A post on the Crime Fighters Helderberg Basin Facebook group warned people to stay out of the area.
The message read: “Macassar Bridge & N2 Incident, Somerset West had been cordoned off by @SAPoliceService due to a guy tied up with a bomb around his body. Police bomb squad and all role players on the scene. Please stay away and make way for emergency vehicles. “
As the drama unfolded, the police kept the crowd at bay and were able to get the man to safety.
Police spokesman Brigadier Novela Potelwa said: “The Western Cape Bomb Disposal Unit responded to an incident in which an employee of a cash transport company was allegedly kidnapped, tied up with explosive materials and forced to remove Cash from various ATMs in Cape Town. They then left the 30-year-old man along the N2 road near Firgrove Road, with the explosive materials still attached. “
He confirmed that as of late yesterday no arrests had been made, but that detectives are investigating a kidnapping and robbery case.
