Port Elizabeth police arrested three men after a violent clash with community members in Soweto-on-Sea.

Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says they have been charged with robbery and public violence after a mob of more than 200 tried to loot a truck carrying thousands of rand of liquor.

The truck driver was apparently heading to Perseverance around 8 p.m. Monday when he took a wrong turn on Johnson Road leading to Soweto-on-Sea.

Captain Janse van Rensburg says that as the driver struggled to get around the large truck, a group of people opened the driver’s door and grabbed his keys and his cell phone.

They then started looting the truck and took an unknown quantity of Gin.

Members of the Kwazakhele police on patrol responded to the commotion and fired rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.

Captain Janse van Rensburg says police seized three vehicles that were being used to load the liquor and that R5000 worth of gin was recovered.

The truck was safely removed from the area Tuesday morning and the three suspects are expected to appear in court soon.
