- As South Africa’s national closure continues in its seventh week, large supermarket groups are seeing strong demand for a number of products.
- Among them, dishwashing products, as more people are forced to make their own food and wash afterwards.
- The bleach has been in high demand since before closing, and hair coloring kit sales have doubled at Pick n Pay.

The South African blockade has led to some interesting retail trends, such as a peak in the sale of non-alcoholic beverages, and pineapples, but there have been several other products that are currently in high demand in supermarkets.
Shoprite and Checkers supermarkets experienced a “significant increase” in the sale of bleach and other household cleaning products, which the group attributes to a greater interest in hygiene and also more time to clean the house in the spring. .
“Products like Albex, Jik, Domestos and Handy Andy sell exceptionally well,” says a company spokesperson.
This is a trend reflected in the Pick n Pay analysis of buying trends in the pre-closing period. According to the group’s annual results presentation, released Tuesday, bleach was one of the most commonly stored items, with sales growing 138%.
Other household items and cleaning products were not far behind.
With more people cooking at home and eating, Shoprite and Checkers say there has been a “notable and sustained increase” in the sale of dishwashing liquids and tablets.
“Dishwasher customers tend to buy a pack of dishwashers, along with a bottle of dishwashing liquid. This points to the dishwasher doing most of the washing, with the handwashing liquid odds and the smallest ends. ”
The increasing use of dishwashers has also seen an increase in sales of associated products, such as dishwashing salt and rinse aid, at these stores.
Some foods have also done well at this time. Shoprite and Checkers say baking and cooking products, as well as braai aids, have been very popular. While Pick n Pay saw significant spikes in the sale of white rice, frozen corn, and spaghetti in the run-up to closing, and an increase in frozen pizza purchases in the following weeks.
And as reality sinks in that salons and hair salons will be closed for the foreseeable future, a clear winner in every store has been home coloring kits and related beauty products.
Pick n Pay, which reported a 92% increase in hair coloring kits during closure, says, “Hair color products have been very popular during closure and we have been well supplied in our stores. Customers They seem to be experimenting with color during closing. “They are buying various hair color and nutrition kits to use at home.”
Shoprite and Checkers report a similar trend.
“The sale of personal care products has skyrocketed at Shoprite and Checkers supermarkets in recent weeks, indicating that South Africans are not allowing the shutdown to prevent them from taking care of themselves,” says a spokesperson.
Hair color products have “gained significant popularity” at Shoprite and Checkers stores, and “there has been a sharp increase in demand for ethnic hair care, especially extensions, relaxers, conditioners, and other treatments.”
The Shoprite group says they have noticed a trend of customers who would typically obtain these products elsewhere, limiting the number of stores they visit, and instead aiming to buy everything in one store, which may explain some of the sales increases.
“There could also be some evidence of the ‘lipstick effect,’ where consumers tend to spend more on small indulgences during a time of economic stress. In cosmetics, nail polish purchases have increased dramatically, while facial creams, skin cleansers and refreshers dominate the skincare category. ”
And men seem to keep up appearances, too, even in the run: Shoprite and Checkers say shaving products, specifically men’s disposables, are growing strongly right now, too.
As the closure has continued, shopping trends have drifted away from staples, and more toward comfort foods and other luxuries.
Hobby-style paint and brushes had a 288% increase in demand at Pick n Pay during closing, for example.
