Durban – As of Thursday, October 1, SA will open its borders and ports of entry to allow the resumption of trips.

Speaking during a press conference on Wednesday, ministers from the National Coronavirus Command Council gave the necessary clarifications on how the borders will be reopened for travel.

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation, Naledi Pandor, said that the gradual reopening of borders and ports of entry informed by a cautious approach means that a limited number of ports of entry and borders will be opened from October 1.

“As we reopen these selected ports of entry and borders, we will be guided by epidemiological and transmission rates in both South Africa and the traveler’s countries of origin,” he said.

This test must be performed by a certified physician and must have the name and signature of the physician who performed the test.

Upon arrival at the port of entry, the traveler will be tested for any symptoms of Covid-19 or contact with people who have been infected with the Covid-19 virus.

Travelers will also need to provide proof of the accommodation address in case they need to self-quarantine upon arrival in the country.

If the traveler exhibits any symptoms related to Covid-19 or has been in contact with an infected person, they are expected to undergo a mandatory Covid-19 test. This test will be the responsibility of the traveler. If the Covid-19 test is positive, the traveler will be subjected to a 10-day quarantine at a designated site. Accommodation in a quarantine site will be at the expense of the traveler.
