JOHANNESBURG – While South Africa is in line to receive a COVID-19 vaccine, there is still no clarity on when the innovative treatment will arrive in its homeland.

And the UK have already started administering the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine to their citizens.

The Solidarity Fund disbursed the deposit of R327 million to the Covax facility of the World Health Organization (WHO), the global initiative to ensure rapid and equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines for all countries, to acquire the vaccine .

The initial payment is intended to guarantee the treatment of 10% of the country’s population.

Professor Adrian Puren from the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) said on Saturday: “There is a lot of momentum in the UK and other countries with healthcare workers who have been on the front line getting, for example, the proportion of those vaccines before given the current state of the pandemic to try to protect these vulnerable workers ”.
