  • But you have to stay at least six feet from a gym buddy at that point.

Those who go to the gym now do not have to wear a mask while exercising “vigorously”, according to new government regulations that have been published.

The regulations state that while you must wear a mask when entering a gym, it is not necessary when engaging in “vigorous activity” as long as a distance of two meters is maintained.

According to Virgin Active, the intensity of “vigorous” or “high intensity” exercise is defined as approximately 70% to 85% of a person’s maximum heart rate. It would apply to treadmills and stationary bikes, as well as group classes.

Since July, South Africans have been allowed to “exercise vigorously” in a public place outdoors without a mask, if they stay at least three meters away from anyone else.

Under the new regulations, gyms are still allowed only 50 people at a time, a rule that has caused much discontent in the industry.

“We are very limited by the government restriction of 50 people in a club at a time, even though some clubs reach 5,000 mtwo, which means we can only have one member for every 100 milliontwo, compared to international standards of one member per 7 milliontwo“a Virgin Active spokesperson told Business Insider SA.” Gyms in this country range in size from 50 mtwo up to 5,000 mtwo and a single limit of 50 people for all gyms is not appropriate. “

Members must maintain a minimum distance of one and a half meters from each other in “low and medium activity” areas and two meters in “high intensity” areas.

The regulations also require that all low and medium intensity training equipment must be separated by five feet, while all high intensity training equipment must be separated by two meters.

In study classes, participants must stay six feet apart, and there must be a 15-minute window between classes to allow for cleanup before other classes resume. All equipment, including floor mats, should be cleaned between uses.

Gyms should also place markers on the floor that highlight social distancing of 1.5m or 2m. Saunas and steam rooms, as well as nurseries, must be closed.
