Orlando Pirates midfielder Thembinkosi Lorch was arrested by police last night after he allegedly hit his girlfriend.
This comes after the footballer’s girlfriend, Nokhupiwa Mathithibala, opened an assault case against him at the Midrand Police Station, stating that Lorch strangled her after she asked him about his whereabouts.
The incident, according to a police statement, seen by Sunday World, occurred Sunday night at the soccer player’s compound in Midrand.
Mathithibala claims that Lorch became angry after she asked him where he had been after his disappearance for six hours, leaving her at her house, where they were supposed to relax after washing their two cars.
She said the soccer player slapped her and then began to strangle her, sitting on top of her, while she lay on the ground.
The statement shows that Mathithibala indicated that Lorch then took the car that she was driving and left with her friend, leaving her stranded and without transportation.
A police officer close to the case said Lorch was picked up by officers in the early hours of Monday morning and was sleeping in police cells.
The source revealed that the Orlando Pirates player appeared in court today for a bail hearing.
Provincial police spokeswoman Kay Makhubele confirmed that an assault case was opened against a 27-year-old man and said the man was arrested early Monday at his place of residence.
“The suspect is reported to have physically assaulted the complainant after a verbal exchange between the two, and the victim was allegedly rescued by the suspect’s friend who was present at the time of the incident which is related to domestic matters,” Makhubele said.
