Police Minister Bheki Cele declined to comment on developments in the Senzo Meyiwa case and reports that a weapon related to his murder was found.

“It is a shame that you have to answer things for which you are not responsible. The weapon found should not be news, it should end and solve the case,” he told reporters in Durban on Wednesday.

Cele was in Durban with KwaZulu-Natal Prime Minister Sihle Zikalala to make announcements about crime-fighting efforts in the province.

When asked, he lacked details about the Meyiwa affair.

“Surely, I heard it leaked, now how do you expect the minister to respond on the leaked issues? So I will leave them leaked and respond in our next statement and make an announcement on whether the weapon is found or linked to someone.”

News24 revealed this week that a police team investigating Meyiwa’s murder made a breakthrough after finding the firearm that was allegedly used to kill the former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper and Bafana Bafana.

News24 further reported that police identified the man who allegedly fired the shots that killed Meyiwa in October 2014.

Meyiwa was shot and killed by unknown gunmen while at a party in Vosloorus on the East Rand at the home of musician Kelly Khumalo, who was his girlfriend at the time.

A senior police officer actively involved in the investigation said the firearm and the identification of the man who allegedly pulled the trigger were crucial evidence expected to solve the murder, which authorities have described as too complex, News24 reported .

News24 further stated that a series of reports prepared in July to update senior police officers on progress in the investigation into Meyiwa’s murder showed that investigators had found the murder weapon in a safe at the Cleveland Police Station. .

The man who allegedly pulled the trigger, killing Meyiwa instantly, is in Johannesburg prison serving a 30-year jail sentence for the January 2015 murder of Alexandra’s taxi chief Reggie Mohlala, reports show. Furthermore, the record shows that the same weapon was used to kill Mohlala.
