JOHANNESBURG – Former President Jacob Zuma wants the deputy chairman of the state capture commission, Raymond Zondo, to recuse himself.

Zuma said he would not appear before Zondo because he believed that Zondo had already decided that he was guilty of all the accusations against him.

In a letter sent through his attorney, Eric Mabuza, the former president said it was clear that Zondo wanted to portray him as uncooperative.

Zuma decided that neither he nor his legal representatives will go to the state capture commission to request a subpoena, with the intention of compelling him to appear next month.

He said Zondo’s statement about him last week was further testimony to his disdain and that he would no longer tolerate it.

He added that Zondo’s statement lacked judicial decorum and was unnecessary because at no point had he said that he would not cooperate.

Zuma said he was preparing a detailed affidavit to show all the cases where Zondo proved that he had already decided he was guilty and believed that this bias would not allow him a fair hearing.

The former president also alleged that Zondo had adopted “a partial disposition” towards him and, therefore, could not contribute an impartial mind to the evidence against him.

He said this stems from the historical personal and professional relationships between them that Zondo should have disclosed to the commission before he was appointed to head it.

The commission has not yet responded to the letter.
