Bayana Banyana have won their seventh COSAFA Women’s Championship title by beating Botswana in their final at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday.
South Africa won 2-1 after leading 1-0 at halftime.
Desiree Ellis’s charges got under way in the second minute when Botswana goalkeeper Lesedilame Bosija was unable to handle a ball that left the post, which was touched by Thanks in the hall.
Holweni’s goal saw her finish as the tournament’s top scorer with eight.
In the second half, Gabriela Salgado sealed the victory with a goal in the 66th minute at the back of the net.
In the final 10 minutes of the match, Banyana goalkeeper Andile Dlamini slipped as Thanda Mokgabo positioned himself for the visitors.
South Africa has won its fourth consecutive COSAFA Women’s Championship title.
“This trophy is for all of South Africa and women’s football. It is for everyone,” Ellis said after the match.
Botswana made history by appearing in its first COSAFA Women’s Championship final.
