CAPE TOWN – A Gauteng man implicated in the murder of a prominent Cape Town detective was expected to spend another 10 days behind bars before his next court appearance on October 5, 2020.
Zane Killian made a brief appearance in Bishop Lavis Magistrates Court on Friday, exactly one week after Lt. Col. Charl Kinnear was shot and killed in front of his home.
Killian was the first suspect to be arrested, and the Hawks did not rule out the possibility of further arrests at this stage, as the investigation continued.
Kinnear was a member of the Western Cape anti-gang unit who was tasked with investigating cases involving the criminal underworld.
One of the attorneys representing Killian said an arrest warrant was issued for his client on September 20. They then took Killian to Hawks officers in Germiston, Ekurhuleni.
Eric Bryer explained what happened before his client was taken to Cape Town to face charges related to the murder of the murdered detective.
“They took him to the Midrand police station on Monday night. On Tuesday he was in Midrand’s cells until 3pm when he was picked up and taken to Cape Town. It came Wednesday morning, ”he said.
Bryer said his client was indicted Thursday.
On Friday, it was revealed in court that Killian faced charges of murder, conspiracy to commit murder and illegal wiretapping.
The State alleged that between March and September 18, Killian illegally intercepted Kinnear’s cell phone.
