Durban – The family of slain Captain Bafana Bafana, Senzo Meyiwa, believes the men arrested for the soccer star’s death and now plan to help one of the men arrested for murder.
Senzo Meyiwa’s brother, Sfiso Meyiwa, said the family had always said that the men arrested and charged with Meyiwa’s murder were innocent.
It comes after Sinqobile Maphisa, the sister of one of the men arrested in connection with the 2014 murder, took to social media Sunday claiming her brother’s innocence and apparent torture in prison.
Speaking to the Daily News after seeing Maphisa’s Facebook post, Sfiso said they were launching a series of events that would “make heads roll.”
“There is substantial evidence in the second file of a defeat for the purposes of justice,” Meyiwa said Sunday when asked why the family had always believed the men arrested were innocent.
Meyiwa was shot and killed while at the home of his girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo, in Vosloorus in an alleged robbery on October 26, 2014, six other people were with him at the home at the time of the incident.
In October, News24 reported on the second file Sifiso refers to, which alleged that the weapon used to kill Meyiwa had been found.
He said the man who allegedly pulled the trigger was serving a 30-year prison sentence for another murder.
The investigator’s report in this second file that was delivered to the NPA recommended that those who were in the house at the time of Meyiwa’s murder should also be criminally charged for frustrating the purposes of justice.
Muzikawukhalelwa Sibiya, Bongani Sandiso Ntanzi, Mthobisi Prince Mncube, Mthokoziseni Ziphozonke Maphisa and Fisokuhle Nkani Ntuli face charges of murder, robbery with aggravated circumstances, attempted murder, possession of a firearm and ammunition without a license.
When they first appeared in October, the men refused to go up onto the dock protesting their innocence.
On Sunday morning, Maphisa’s sister Sinqobile wrote that in the first week after they appeared in court, the police arrived at her brother’s cell (Leeuwkop Prison) wearing black shirts written EST (Support Team of emergency).
These officers searched the cell he shared with more than eight people.
She alleged that several cell phones were found, however, only Maphisa was punished with the assault.
She alleges that in the second week he returned, grabbed him and assaulted him, leaving him for dead but survived.
Since then he has been continually assaulted by these EST officials.
She alleges that the defendant Mncube has since been transferred from Johannesburg Central Prison to another in Pretoria and claims that he is being tortured into admitting to killing Meyiwa.
Sinqobile alleges that the police “have been wandering the streets of Vosloorus begging people to testify in court promising them money.”
“Unbeknownst to the police, some of the people they approached are friends of my brother and alerted me. What these cops are trying to hide, what happens to everyone who was inside the house when Senzo was killed. If the police have evidence as they claim, then why is the case still being postponed? What else do they need to gather if they’ve said they have all the proof? Sinqobile asked in his post.
Sfiso said the family would contact Afriforum and others in an attempt to help the Maphisa family.
“Right now I can’t divulge who the others are, but heads will roll.”
Sinqobile said it felt good to have the support of the Meyiwa family and felt that justice would be done.
The Daily News has sent the spokesperson to the Minister of Police a query regarding the complaints made as well as to the Department of Prison Services regarding the alleged activities in their prisons.
None had responded at the time of publication.
