He attributed the highest number of cases to intense activity, including the high proof of Covid-19.

Mkhize also expressed concern about the increase in infections in the Eastern Cape, blaming irresponsible social behavior and parties in the province.

“We will go to the Eastern Cape and announce our intervention when we get there,” he said.

The concern comes days after President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the government would introduce special health measures, drawn up with the help of the World Health Organization (WHO), to slow the spread of the pandemic in the Eastern Cape, which runs the risk of a second. wave of Covid-19 infections.

Just before Ramaphosa began his speech, it emerged that the former mayor of the Eastern Cape Nelson Mandela Bay, Mongameli Bobani, who had been admitted to the ICU with Covid-19 three weeks ago, had died.

“Evidence suggests that the increases in the Eastern Cape could have been triggered by outbreaks in institutions of higher education, such as universities and schools, and the attendance of people at large gatherings,” Ramaphosa said.
