JOHANNESBURG – A conveyor belt that fed coal to the Medupi power station broke down, increasing the risk of loss of load.

Eskom said that four generating units had been affected, putting further pressure on the system over the next 24 hours.

Technicians are already working on site to repair the damaged conveyor belt, which is estimated to take at least the remainder of the day.

Spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantha warned that they may have to turn off their power again if there are more breakdowns.

“While Eskom crews are working around the clock to repair the conveyor, which is expected to take most of the day, any other breakdowns elsewhere in the generation fleet would require a stage 2 load cut with short notice”.
